Metal Sludge — In a brand new installment of the Waste Some Time with Jason Green Podcast, Nitro’s vocalist Jim Gillette is the guest.
Gillette talks about his early years singing in local Phoenix area bands, and eventually releasing the Vocal Power voice instructional lessons in 1986 as a teenager.
Green touches on a variety of subjects with the semi-retired singer including those popular vocal tapes, the singers who emulate his famous screams on Youtube and how the T.V. show Myth Busters wanted Gillette to appear on an episode about shattering glass.
Gillette passed on that opportunity, but referred a former student and vocal instructor Jamie Vendera. (See Video below)
They touch on Nitro and his post music career where Gillette has spent over 25 years developing real estate.
Gillette also mentions some industry contacts suggesting he should submit tapes and audition for Accept and Judas Priest back in the 90’s.
“”Ripper” (Tim Owens) is great singer. He’s a phenomenal singer. He’s got a great voice and he’s very talented. No offense to him at all, (but) Judas Priest didn’t sell sh!t with him, compared to Rob (Halford)” says Gillette.
“You’re never going to replace Rob Halford in Judas Priest and have anywhere near the success. He’s the Metal God. It’s Rob Halford man” added Gillette.
Gillette also talked about Mark Slaughter being the replacement to Robert Fleishman in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion.
“Mark (Slaughter) took the band further than the original guy, which doesn’t happen. Can you imagine if Judas Priest sold more records with “Ripper” than with Rob (Halford)?” said Gillette.
Gillette also mentions being in touch with Dana Strum during that transition period with VVI, and how he was considered as a replacement before Mark Slaughter was brought in.
