JOKES ON YOU
Eddie Trunk tells caller Tom that ‘Steel Panther is a joke’ – Tom in reality is the band’s guitarist Satchel
Reality Check — That Metal Show host and all around heavy metal know-it-all Eddie Trunk recently shed some light on his thoughts about Steel Panther, again.
Trunk in the industry to many is known as a heavy metal guru and often gives his thoughts and opinions on all things ‘hard rock’ but has seemingly had a long standing hard-on for the West Coast based hair metal act Steel Panther.
Trunk 50, is a New Jersey native and spent years hosting small and local radio shows from the tri-state area. In recent years with his new found success on Vh1’s ‘That Metal Show’, he now has a much larger audience with a syndicated radio.
During a recent show Trunk took a call from caller ‘Tom’ and the subject again was Steel Panther. Caller Tom according to Eddie’s comments waited for over 30 minutes to get the chance to talk to the TMS host.
Tom, age 44 is a fan from California and says he’s a fan of Steel Panther and asks Trunk his thoughts on the group.
Trunk then spends nearly 7 minutes informing caller Tom all about Steel Panther.
Trunk tells the caller and his audience, “The guys in Steel Panther are good guys and they are good musicians, but for me, I’m not into it. I have tried many times.”
“A lot of the fans of that band (Steel Panther), I find, are guys like, and girls in their like 20’s. In their mid and early 20’s, who don’t know it’s a spoof (Trunk laughing to himself). And they kind of, they’re not really an old hard-rock fan base. They’re a fan base, that actually, ummm, either, is into making fun of the 80’s bands, or doesn’t get the connections and just thinks their funny, and fun” says Trunk as he insults part of the band’s die-hard following.
Trunk states, “For me, It’s not, it’s a joke. It’s a parody. It’s a spoof. So, I can’t get excited about it.”
“I don’t wanna interview them in their characters. You know what I’m saying. I want to interview them about the people they were. The singer, use to be in a Van Halen tribute band. Satchel, who, everybody knows is really Russ Parrish, he was in FIGHT with Rob Halford.”
For those keeping score here, the caller ‘Tom’ – is in fact Russ Parrish (pka Satchel).
Oddly, Parrish, also age 44 lives in California. #LOL
Editor note to readers. Steel Panther will not do interviews out of character and for that, it appears per his claim – that Trunk refuses to interview Steel Panther in character.
Trunk says, “I’m not gonna, that’s just not my thing. I’m not gonna sit there and yuck it up. That’s great for some morning radio show to do, but not for me. I mean, everybody knows that I know this stuff, that’s what I make my living at, so I am not gonna go down that road.”
Trunk adds, “To sit and talk to those guys, like ya know, they are this ground breaking future of heavy metal band is absurd to me. I just can’t do that. And I don’t feel that way. I mean I feel that they are a fun band, having a spoof, but it’s a joke.”
“There is a segment of their fan base who are not in on the joke, which is hysterical of in itself.” – Eddie Trunk
The self-proclaimed KISS fanatic continues, “Their albums are on the Comedy Charts. It’s a joke.”
Trunk also confirms, “I was never a fan of Weird Al” and ends with “Thanks for the call.”
Metal Sludge ran an article in June 2014 breaking down some of the on-going comments from Trunk aimed at the West Coast darlings of all things 80’s-glam rock and spandex Read that HERE.
