“I don’t understand because I’ve flown in snowstorms before but these flights are all canceled and now we are staying in Appleton tonight and figuring out how to get out of here tomorrow.“
— Sebastian Bach
“Touring by air is a total crapshoot. With the focus on crap.”
— Sebastian Bach
Metal Sludge — Sebastian Bach was stuck in Appleton Wisconsin over the weekend and he doesn’t understand why.
According to a post on his social media from Sunday December 15th, the former Skid Row screamer blogged that he didn’t understand why his flight was canceled.
Bach, 56, went onto say: “So here we are at the airport in Appleton Wisconsin and our flights are all canceled due to weather it’s too foggy. I don’t understand because I’ve flown in snowstorms before but these flights are all canceled and now we are staying in Appleton tonight and figuring out how to get out of here tomorrow.”
Editor’s Note to Sebastian: Hey, maybe the airline didn’t want to kill everyone on the plane, seem reasonable?
Bach played the annual WAPL Xmas Bash with special guest Lita Ford on Friday night December 14th in Green Bay Wisconsin which is about a 30 minute drive from Appleton.
The concert was held at EPIC Event’s Center which is within a rock’s throw from the Green Bay Packers football stadium Lambeau Field.
Bach seemed to be frustrated not being able to fly home, and stated he had another show to get to this week down in Florida.
Music fans will recall the ill-fated flight on February 3rd 1959 that took the life of 3 promising music stars; “Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” J. P. Richardson were all killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event became known as “The Day the Music Died” after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song “American Pie“.
A report about the 1959 crash stated: “Soon after takeoff, late at night and in poor, wintry weather conditions, pilot Peterson lost control of the light aircraft, a Beechcraft Bonanza, which crashed into a cornfield, killing all four on board.”
Roughly 30 years after the legendary ‘The Day The Music Died‘ plane crash, guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn was killed in a Helicopter crash on August 27th 1990, which was largely due to bad weather conditions (low cloud ceiling, fog).
The tragic death of Vaughn, Jeff Brown (pilot), Bobby Brooks (agent), Nigel Browne (bodyguard) and Colin Smith (tour manager) happened after a show at Alpine Valley Music Amphitheater that same night.
A report states: “The investigation determined the aircraft departed in foggy conditions with visibility reportedly under 2 mi (3.2 km), according to a local forecast” which ended with the helicopter crashing and killing everyone on board.
Concert promoter and Hall of Famer Bill Graham was also killed in a Helicopter crash due to questionable weather conditions.
Wikipedia writes: “On October 25, 1991, a Bell 206 carrying rock music concert promoter Bill Graham, his girlfriend Melissa Gold, and pilot Steve Kahn crashed into a transmission tower west of Vallejo, California, killing everyone on board. The cause of the accident was determined to be the pilot’s intentional flight into known adverse weather conditions.”
In a similar tragedy to Vaughn‘s, on January 26th 2020 former Los Angeles Lakers star basketball player Kobe Bryant was killed along with his Daughter (Gianna), the Pilot and 6 other passengers (9 in total were killed) when their helicopter also flew in questionable conditions.
The Los Angeles Police Air Support Division had grounded its police helicopters on the morning of January 26th 2020 due to poor visibility and low ceiling says a report on Wikipedia.
The full message Bach shared with his readers was as follows: “thank you so much Green Bay Wisconsin for an epic night of rock ‘n’ roll that we will never forget. Completely great to play with the one and only @litafordofficial look at the cool message she left for me on my mirror in my dressing room when I got off stage! So here we are at the airport in Appleton Wisconsin and our flights are all canceled due to weather it’s too foggy. I don’t understand because I’ve flown in snowstorms before but these flights are all canceled and now we are stayingt in Appleton tonight and figuring .out how to get out of here tomorrow. I am playing a gig with Mark Mcgrath in Orlando Florida on Wednesday so I guess I’ll just be going straight to Orlando from Appleton. Touring by air is a total crapshoot. With the focus on crap.”
A quick Google search for related weather conditions in and around Wisconsin for Saturday December 14th 2024 all show a ‘Winter Weather Advisory‘ for most of the state, in addition to ‘Icy Roads‘ and continued ‘Warnings‘ to be safe when traveling.
