“I was a maniac, my wife reminds me of that all the time. My wife first met me when she was 14 and I was 22.”
— Robert Sweet of Stryper
Metal Sludge — Back in the 80’s Jon Bon Jovi was known for several things, including great music, his big brite smile and sex appeal… but his shaggy hair with frosted tips were also a draw for the Bad Medicine bad boy.
There were a lot of guys that had great hair during MTV‘s biggest era, the list of long hairs is endless.
David Coverdale, Sebastian Bach and Nikki Sixx come to mind… but let us not forget the amazing Farrah Facett-esque head of hair that sat on top of Stryper drummer Robert Sweet‘s head.
And that same head of hair, is still there for Sweet.
Unfortunately, not everyone’s hair held up, or even stayed on their head… but Sweet who turns 64 in March still has plenty to go around.
The Stryper band has endured its fair share of controversy over the years, including the question about their honesty (no pun intended) when it came to their religious beliefs or if they strictly followed the Bible.
There were some who questioned that, and brought up all kinds of rumors over the years.
An infamous incident more than 30 years ago included Robert Sweet sitting next to King Diamond on a music panel, when King commented something along the lines of; “Money is the root of all evil” as he pointed towards the drummer’s expensive watch.
This made news back in the day and there are still photos of that event floating around the internet.
There were also whispers of all the excesses that went along with the other bands, meaning the stuff Motley Crue, Ratt and W.A.S.P. were doing, well… Stryper were rumored to be doing it as well.
As for what exactly they were doing, we’ll let you use your imagination.
Oddly, in this brand new interview on the Waste Some Time with Jason Green show, there are already a few heads turning when Sweet tells listeners about meeting his future wife when she was a minor and he was into his 20’s.
“I was a maniac, my wife reminds me of that all the time. My wife first met me when she was 14 and I was 22” says Sweet.
Sweet also talks about some of his history related to the band Ratt as transcribed by Metal Sludge: “At one point, I was asked if I would like to be the drummer for Ratt. And that was in 1984, and would I have ever loved that. What an absolute compliment, oh my God. I mean, you know it still tears at me” says Sweet.
“And I really believe, if I would have been the drummer in Ratt, they might not have gone though some of the troubles that they’ve gone through.”
“I feel like Stephen (Pearcy) and I were always able to get along at a really cool level” added Sweet.
