Metal Sludge — In the never ending debate of who is Glam, and what is Hair Metal, and is Hairband a bad thing to say… Stryper frontman Michael Sweet has went on record to say: “We were NOT a “Glam Band””
Sweet recently shared an article from Ultimate Guitar that included Stryper in their piece, about Glam bands and Grunge.
The article “7 Great Glam Bands That the Rise of Grunge Hit the Most” lists; Cinderella, Faster Pussycat, White Lion, Motley Crue, Winger, Stryper and Nitro.
Ultimate Guitar on Stryper writes: “Although the overall glorious insanity of the 80s brought some pretty wild things, no-one would have guessed that a Christian glam rock band would be one of them. Stryper, however, was just that. With a name taken out straight out of a King James Bible quote and album titles such as “Soldiers Under Command”, “To Hell With the Devil” (certified platinum) and “In God We Trust”, Stryper was delivering the Lord’s word throughout the decade – and the audiences loved it.”
Ultimate Guitar continues: “However, not even piety turned out to be a reliable safeguard against grunge’s onslaught, as the band’s popularity took a dive at the beginning of the following decade. Or maybe it was God’s punishment for naming their fifth album “Against the Law” and not mentioning the Almighty a single time on it. We’ll never know.“
Now Sweet has taken to his official Facebook to state that Poison, Faster Pussycat and Tuff were Glam, but his band Stryper were not.
Oddly, Tuff is not even mentioned in the article, and most know that the band’s singer owns Metal Sludge.
Never at a loss for words, our CEO Stevie Rachelle was sure to reply with his view and we’ve shared those replies below as seen on Sweet‘s Facebook post in the comments section.
In a recent interview with the 80’s Metal Recycle Bin rock drummer Robert Sweet of Stryper on the incoming Grunge era, and music scenery change in the early 1990’s: “That was a time that was real interesting in the music industry, you know, things were kind of seemed like, it was dying down for the Hair Metal guys. Not that I really looked at Stryper as that, but I think some people did look at us that way. I don’t really think we were, but we did have hair, I still got it.”
As for who is Glam and who is not, well… it’s subjective and there are lots of opinions.
We say Stryper were absolutely a Glam band, what say you?
