Metal Sludge — In a newly uploaded video interview, longtime RIP Magazine Editor Lonn Friend talks to 80’s Metal Recycle Bin.

Friend goes into detail on a plethora of subjects ranging from his first meeting with Metallica, to Guns N’ Roses and his early start in business working for Porn publisher Larry Flynt.

“Hey, you guys are Metallica?” said Friend to Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield as they stood outside the Rainbow Bar & Grill on the Sunset Strip.

Friend then details how he introduced himself to the Metal Duo and their subsequent knowledge of him from a previously published porn story.

That night at The Bow started a long friendship between the writer and rockers which included a detailed inside look at the band’s in-studio recording session for the “Black” album.

Friend also talks about Guns N’ Roses and their unique click of some Indiana boys meeting some local Hollywood guys.

Over time it is explained that Friend seemingly used his Porn connection, to help lure in some of the rockers to make RIP that much cooler.

“Coming out of Hustler Magazine, I had a sense of legitimacy with the Hard Rock, Heavy Metal community.” says Friend

Friend continues: “When these bands would come up and I started to establish the friendships, I would give them packages of Porn. Magazines, videos to take with them. And they would come up to the office, and because RIP was inside (at that time) the Hustler offices, I’d walk them into the photo department… Richie Sambora, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul Stanley, Steven Tyler, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, all these guys visited me then.”

Friend gives a great insider’s perspective, detailing and breaking down some of the era’s most important bands and musicians.
