Metal Sludge — Just like clockwork as L.A. Guns are about to release their new album “Checkered Past” on Frontiers Records Srl, the band’s front-man Phil Lewis is making the rounds and doing press.

And per usual, there is some mud slinging at his own band members, and others in the industry as well.

Most recently, Lewis swears it’s not a knock, but his words could easily be construed as just that.

Lewis on Kip Winger in an interview with The Rock Experience With Mike Brunn as covered by Blabbermouth: “The whole thing, the whole L.A. music scene was becoming more about the hair and the silliness of it,” he said. “We weren’t really silly. I mean, we did some silly stuff, but we always fancied ourselves to be more of a biker, leathery, dirty band. We were quite happy being dirty.

“The trend towards — and this is definitely, I swear, it’s not a knock — but when you get guys like Kip Winger; he’s like a model, he’s so fucking handsome [with] big hair and big teeth, and we’re quite dirty and ugly, and we’ve got missing teeth.

“I didn’t like the direction it was going,” Phil admitted. “And I think it was probably about time to cull it. And these things have a two- or three-year cycle. And I felt like we’d run ours. We got lumped into what they call ‘hair metal,’ ’cause we were around at that time. But we never were.”

In another recent interview, Lewis appeared on the Chuck Shute Podcast, and talked at length about the various stages of the band’s career, with and without Tracii Guns.

As was reported by Sleazeroxx, Lewis talks about the ugly incident when Guns left to play in Brides of Destruction: “I really felt like Waking The Dead, we’ve got our vibe, our groove back, and we were just getting ready to promote the record. And it was coming out and we had a tour lined up with Alice Cooper, and Tracii bolted. He fucked off. He decided he wanted to be in a band with Nikki Sixx and just focus on that. He fucked us. He fucked that record. It was the most astounding piece of selfishness I’ve ever encountered in my life and that was the beginning and the cause of the 15 years estrangement.”
