Metal Sludge — On the latest episode of This, That & The Other Radio Show and Podcast, host Troy Patrick Farrell interviews a popular mash-up DJ named DJ Schmolli.

Schmolli is from Austria, and has been doing mash-up music for over 20 years according to the new interview.

Schmolli, also says that the band Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters took his identical idea and called it their own.

Farrell and TTTO has asked is it “Theft”, was it “Borrowed” and states either way, it was “Uncredited” when referring to Schmolli’s 9 year old mash-up track idea that was re-recorded and recently released by Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters.

Schmolli is a veteran in the DJ world and has performed in numerous countries internationally including; Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Holland, Hungary, France, Brazil and even in the U.S.A., most notably New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Schmolli also has multiple online social media outlets with countless tracks, mash-ups and re-works to his credit, which have resulted in millions of views and plays from around the globe, including spins on the world-famous BBC Radio 1.

Schmolli has produced over 350 mashups making him one of the most successful mashup producers in the world.

Schmolli’s track “Rock Of Ages” has been shared by several other Youtube channels, DJ’s and Youtoobers, several of which have in excess of 1 and 2 million plays each.

And if that wasn’t enough to digest, DJ Schmolli’s “Rock Of Ages” was also mashed-up earlier in the spring of 2021, with Eurovision Song Contest winners Maneskin.

Now for the West Coast based Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters, who recently exploded onto social media with the release of their debut song “Rock Your Fu*king Age” back in early September 2021.

Shortly after on September 29th 2021, the band announced the addition of a new member, Travis Haley on bass, previously known as Lexxi Foxx from Steel Panther.

In the last 60 days HGNM have now dropped numerous tracks, all of which are the mash-up style, or as they are calling it, smash-up.

However, in recent weeks, the very popular DJ Schmolli track made it’s way into the ears of certain HGNM followers, some of whom became confused when the 2012 Schmolli track seemingly appears to be nearly identical to the newly released HGNM single.

Below you can hear both Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters Rock Your Fu*king Age” shared on their official Facebook (September 9th 2021) and also hear DJ Schmolli’sRock Of Ages” uploaded to Youtube back nearly a decade ago on June 19th 2012.

Now in a recent interview with investigative online journalist, part-time pod-caster and drummer Troy Patrick Farrell – who is also the host of This, That & The Other Radio Show – Farrell breaks it down like this.

Farrell in his lead up to the interview with Schmolli details the following; “They say they’re not a cover band, they say it’s ORIGINAL STUFF.  (Well),
Welcome to this weeks guest from Austria DJ SCHMOLLI who released an IDENTICAL TRACK (less a few very minor changes) nearly 10 YEARS AGO! And he was not credited.”

Farrell adds: “When I reached out to HGNM, Dave (‘Diggity’ Aragon) essentially said:Mash Ups are open source style music where guys do their mash ups and then other guys add their layers and no one really gets credit.”

“They TAKE CREDIT for “Rock Your Fuckin Age” as ORIGINAL STUFF. But DJ SCHMOLLI has something to say about that…” added Farrell

Schmolli in his 45 minute interview (embedded below) with Farrell goes into detail about all things related to his idea… including how mash-ups are created, how the community works, how stuff is shared and why it’s not okay for HGNM to call “Rock Your Fu*king Age” their own, without crediting him.

Schmolli says the following: “It’s basically the same, they are identical… they covered it exactly.”

“In the middle part they did some slight changes… a longer part of the Beastie Boys track I used, (they) left out The Doors (part), and then the end is the same again.” added Schmolli.

In a recent press piece featured on Blabbermouth, ‘Diggity’ Dave Aragon talks about Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters saying: “We are not a cover band. This is original stuff we’re creating, and it’s a living, breathing history of music.” (see screen capture below)

“They have done it cool, in a cool way” says Schmolli but also states in his new interview with Farrell and TTTO: “(It’s) my idea.”

“That’s not really cool, within the scene, so… you have to come up with your own ideas” says Schmolli about the mash-up community, and people using someone else’s idea.

“The way I used all these tracks, I’ve used this in a certain way, in a certain song structure, and it’s my idea. To use it like this, to use every song sample, in a certain way, like (I did) in my mash-up” says Schmolli.

Farrell asking: “In the (same) order you did?”

Schmolli answers; “Yes.”

At some point Schmolli points out that Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters had used (borrowed) another DJ friend’s track as well stating: “Not only did they take my mash-ups, because I’ve heard other songs done by them, other mash-ups. They took for example, umm, a mash-up by William Maranci, another mash-up Producer. Who mixed together Linkin Park and Lady Gaga. Just 2 tracks in this case, but they, you know they covered this already existing mash-up and also did not credit William Maranci for his idea.”

Metal Sludge have shared Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters mash-up of Lady Gaga and Linkin Park below from their official Facebook page from October 14th 2021 along with the DJ William Maranci version (also embedded below) which appears to have been shared over 12 years ago on Youtube back on November 2nd 2009.

Schmolli adds: “They (Hollywood Gods N’ Monsters) are trying to convince people they are doing something new, which is not the case.”
