Metal Sludge — In a brand new episode of 80’s Metal Recycle Bin, the interview is with world-class rock singer Geoff Tate.

Tate as most know, was the long time frontman for the band Queensrÿche.

Tate says he first started taking piano lessons at age 9, and then joined the school band at age 10 where he played both keyboards and trumpet through High School.

It wasn’t until a local band’s singer got sick and couldn’t make the gigs, that Tate decided to give it a try to sing at their rehearsal, and one of the other guys said: “Wow, you have a good voice, can you sing this stuff?”

“I think I can. I stood up, started singing and I became the singer.” says Tate laughing.

Tate also talks about an array of subjects including:

* The influence of Rush “2112” on him and his friends
* Taking voice lessons from a local voice instructor named The Maestro
* Mentions of local Seattle acts, Heart, Rail & Steve Miller
* On touring with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kiss, Ozzy and Scorpions
* The band made a conscious decision to write a concept album
* Explains how they worked as a band and collaborated on songs
* All about writing ‘Operation: Mindcrime
* Being grateful to be part of what Queensrÿche achieved
* On Chris DeGarmo leaving the band
* Chris DeGarmo was a major contributor to the band
* On Scott Rockenfield and how his drumming helped the songs
* How Grunge influenced their ‘Hear in the Now Frontier‘ album
