20 QUESTIONS WITH…

BulletBoys / Mandy Moore Guitarist Jason Hook

This week we talk to Jason Hook. Jason is not only the guitarist for the BulletBoys, but for Mandy Moore as well!! This is about as close as we are ever going to get to Mandy, or Marq Torien for that matter, so enjoy every moment of this! 

1. What are you up to? This is your only chance to plug your shit.

My schedule has kept me pretty busy…… where do I start….? I just secured an endorsement from a great guitar company: Watson Guitars http://www.watsonguitars.com. Bullet Boys just finished a 3 song demo (produced by Andy Johns) we’re shopping a deal so we can finish the record……….(the music is still very much Bullet Boys ……big guitar HOOKS etc.) I recorded an acoustic version of Mandy’s next single “Walk me home” for a Christmas package… I’ll be touring with Mandy up until Christmas the NYC date will be at Madison Square Gardens. Bullet Boys will be playing a festival in Sweden in the Spring. of course my websites are constant works in progress www.jasonhook.net and www.shotputmedia.com (Designing websites has become a hobby for me)

2. What is your musical background, such as what previous bands have you been in, blah blah blah, all that stuff.

Well I actually started playing drums about age 6………….blah blah blah…………….I know……….who really cares right….? I spent most of my time in a band called NO LOVE LOST from Canada……..we signed a huge record deal with Elektra out of New York in 1993……..we spent a year searching for a producer and making the record (produced by Beau Hill)…….by then rock wasn’t “cool” anymore……..the week after we submitted the record, we got dropped……….typical story……. After that I joined the Killer Dwarfs for about a month (great guys…………GO DUNK!) Then I got a call from Mick Sweda who I had met through a mutual friend. I returned to L.A.and started a band with him called Brain Stem Babies (we had some cool harmony solo stuff………..it was a fun band, Mick’s a great player.) After that, I teamed up with Beau Hill and started a “project band” (write the songs first and hire the band later) called New Pop Eden…………….that didn’t fly with the labels so I reconstructed the group with a female singer and called it Rhino Party……………..that didn’t fly either so I was very close to saying *&$^#% the music business all together………………

then Mandy Moore called me. ( I used to baby sit her back when I lived in Florida……………….YEAH RIGHT!!) the truth is, her other guitar player (Ty Stevens) is a good friend of mine and they just fired their acoustic player and my name came up………………….It’s weird…when you want something so bad you almost chase it away……… the second you don’t care ……..it comes to you.

3. How did you end up playing for Mandy?

4. What hard rock/heavy metal band should give it up and call it a day?

Van Halen lost me as a fan when they made that record with Gary. I love Kiss and they are “calling it a day.” I’m really burnt on Aerosmith.

5. You are Canadian, so do you consider that a handicap? (I loved the way you phrased this question to Brent Fitz …….”Do You Consider Canada to be a real Country”……….classic Metal Sludge!!!) I don’t have much to say about the Canadian music industry………It’s tough enough to catch a break in L.A. …….virtually impossible to sustain musical career in Canada…………most Canadian bands, if they are lucky, see success only after they conquer the American market. I don’t tell people…………………………….”I’m Canadian” sounds like “I’m Visiting”………I don’t want to be judged that way. 6. How do you go from playing guitar for a sweet, 16 year old pop singer to playing with a bitter, 40 something singer in Marq Torien? Usually take the 405 north from the Airport to the Bullet Boys rehearsal space in the Valley…………

7. Vikki Foxx was drumming for the BulletBoys for a while, but now he?s gone. What happened to him and why did he leave?

I think it was a bad timing thing (no pun intended)………………..Vik is an interesting guy…………………Honestly, Vik has done so much, you know with the Vince thing and Enuff thing, that he is very selective about what project he invests his time into………..when he came on board with the B.B. we were in a development stage………….you know, trying to write songs and playing crappy one off gigs with hardly any crew………just to pocket some cash…………….We had just come off the road and were in work mode………….I don’t think he was into the work we had to do to reach our goal………. He has a family too, so he has more financial concerns than we do…………We still talk every once and a while……….I like Vik……..A true showman…….I’m sorry I didn’t get any of our shows with him on video (Just on a side note…………..If I had $10.00 for every girl that came up to me and said I want to $%# Vik Fox …….I’d be shopping for real estate)

8. Do you have any idea if Mandy has ever heard a BulletBoys CD?

No Way…….I remember riding in an elevator with her and someone mentioned Sammy Hagar and she said “who is that?” I assume she’s too young to know much about this genre of music.

9. You have your hair up in horns when you do gigs with the BulletBoys. Do you realize that the drummer from No Doubt had his hair in horns back in 1996?

Yeah and his were way cooler…….. he shaved his whole head and left the two horns long…………………..

10. Rate the following chicks on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being a mess and 10 being a hottie.

11. You are recording a new album with the BulletBoys. How many takes does it take for Marq to sing the parts in key?

Well here’s where I have to make a decision, It’s obvious you guys want me to slag Marq………………..Here’s what I can tell you………When I joined the band, friends warned me that Marq and Lonnie had made some enemies …………..the Marq I know is focused, sober, and almost gentle………….that’s the truth. As far as his singing goes…….I don’t really know Marq to have bad pitch……………..I do think he should quit smoking so many cigarettes. It can’t be good for his voice……………..he throws up after every show……….it’s weird to watch……..I worry about him.

12. What percentage of the time does Lonnie Vencent know where he is:

Lonnie laughed when I told him about this…….his answer (and I agree) was F. none of the above

13. What rock star deserves a kick in the mouth and why?

nobody has pissed me off enough for me to answer that…………..

14. How much was your biggest music related check for and what did you do with it?

I got a nice check when I signed to Elektra in ’93 it was about the amount of a new car…………. first thing I did was buy Mutual Funds….(I know, not very glamorous) Then I bought an old Kiss Pinball Machine.

15. When you do gigs for Mandy, are you even allowed to talk to her? oh yeah…. it’s pretty loose. Many times we wait for hours on a set in a dressing room, where there is nothing to do but talk……….sometimes I jam songs for her, We’ll sing and play Backstreet Boys but heavier……she gets a kick out of it…………I don’t think she ever gets to jam, the pop world is very calculated and controlled. When we played the Rosie show I was talking to one of Mandy’s backup singers, who also sang for Barry White………she told me, if you made eye contact with Barry you would be fired , and you had to address him as “Mr. White”……………….what crap!

16. Who do you think is less known, yourself or Brent Fitz?

Absolutely me…………..but I’m working on it………..

17. Word has it that Jimmy D left the BulletBoys because he wasn?t getting along with Marq and Lonnie. Why did he bail out on the band?

There is a lot of bad blood between those guys……. stuff that I can’t even try to understand………Jimmy is married and sober…….. We went out on tour this summer…………..From my perspective, I think the daily debauchery was starting to wear on him………he left the tour in Philly………….. after the show he gave me a hug said “good luck” and jumped in a cab…………………..He didn’t even say goodbye to those guys.

18. What 80s hard rock band would have you absolutely no desire to ever play with?

19. There was a report that the BulletBoys were going to change their name to “Down With The Sickness.” That sounds like a Disturbed cover band because that’s the name of their album. Is there going to be a name change and what’s the deal with that?

I wasn’t aware that “Down With The Sickness” was the name of a Disturbed album. In my opinion, That would certainly be one great reason for not using it.

20. Has Marq ever grabbed your ass or tried to fondle your genitals at all?

Wow………………you know Lonnie is the one who is more in touch with his femininity
