20 Questions With Steve Stevens, 11/6/01

20 QUESTIONS WITH…

Steve Stevens

Steve Stevens has played with everyone from Billy Idol to Michael Jackson to Michael Monroe to Vince Neil. But that’s not shit compared to what he’s doing now….20 Questions with Metal Sludge! We found out that Steve is a Sludgeaholic so we hit him up for 20 Questions and here they are. Enjoy!

1. What are you up to? This is your only chance to plug your shit.

Just finished 5 months of shows with Billy Idol in support of the greatest hits record. We are now writting songs for a new album.

2. Exactly how tall are you?

5’7”

3. What hard rock/heavy metal band should give it up and call it a day?

This site would be pretty boring if any of the ones that should, did so.

4. How was it working with Michael Jackson and did you see him hanging out with any little kids?

It was very cool to not only be in the studio with Michael, but work with Quincy Jones as well. No little kids, but when we did the Dirty Diana video he had Bubbles the chimp there. Bubbles had his own van with swings and crap in it…. He was also sprayed with Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion perfume, go figure.

5. Rate the following guitar players on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being somebody who sucks and 10 being a virtuoso.

Brent Woods = cant say i’ve ever heard him
Slash = 10…did some dates with us about 3 months ago. He was great
Joe Perry = 10 he understands rule #1…..support the singer and the song
Dimebag Darrell = another guy i cant say i’ve heard, but know who he is
Mick Mars = 8, but man his parts were good fun to play live
C.C. DeVille = 7 but i actually thought Samantha 7 had some good songs on it
Eddie Van Halen = 20 just for Mean Streets alone. He paved the way
Dave Marshall = 8 but was the most down to earth guy in the Vince Neil band
Zakk Wylde = 10 the best metal player, hands down
Bruce Kulick = another guy i cant say i’ve heard

……and why the hell dont you guys list Jeff Beck, he at least rates a 100 and pretty much was the first metal guitarist anyway

6. What was the real reason for you leaving the Vince Neil band?

When Ed Van Halen whispered in my ear as i finished a set “hey man, what the hell are you doing with these guys?, perhaps you should give that Idol guy a call, ha ha” Simply put …..it was no longer fun.

7. What’s the story about the Jerusalem Slim record you did with Michael Monroe? Story goes that the demos were all great and signed off on and then you wanted to do a ‘few’ guitar overdubs and did too many solos all over the place. Apparently Michael was mad about that and refused to tour the band because of this. Is that true?

Michael was there for every note i played on that record. If he had a problem with anything i was doing he should have spoken up. During the mix he was welcome to suggest any parts to leave off. I am proud of the guitar work on that record. I respect Michael greatly and loved working with him, but some things are just not meant to be

8. What is the most fucked up thing you ever witnessed Billy Idol do?

He put his foot through an interviewers tape recorder when the guy said Billy was no longer a punk. He said “there’s ya punk rock for ya”! I loved it and actually so did the interviewer.. ha ha.

9. Is there a reason the riff on “Dangerous” from Bozzio/Levin/Stevens’ Situation Dangerous album sounds *exactly* like Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”?

Yeah, it’s a rip off, but those guys wanted to leave it as it was. It really was meant as a Zep/Crimson homage

Bozzio/Levin/Stevens

10. Rate the following chicks on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being a mess and 10 being a hottie.
Perry Lister = 10, but thats like asking me to rate a sister…she as well produced one great son with Billy, Willem
Heather Locklear = 10 looks great at 40
Pamela Anderson = 10 if only for the fact that she knew a bit about flamenco guitar
Heidi Fleiss = 10 she could have rat’d out alot of people and did’nt
Lita Ford = 8
Wendy O’ Williams = 10 my band used to open for her in 1979. The Plasmatics were great. God bless her and her chainsaw.
Courtney Love = no comment,
Sharise Neil = h av’nt seen her in 8 years… have no idea

The chick guitarist who replaced you in Michael Jackson = her name is Jennifer Batten, give her a 10….any woman that can play the Beat It solo note for note….and hold her own on stage with Jeff Beck, gets a 10

11. On the demo CD of Jerusalem Slim there is a song called “Downwardly Mobile” written by Michael Monroe. Vince Neil’s solo “Exposed” (1993 Warner) is released soon after that with you on the guitar. On Vince’s album there’s a song called “Can’t Have Your cake”, with the exact same solo, chorus etc… as “Downwardly Mobile.” It’s the same song with a different title and lyrics but credits to Stevens and Neil. What’s up with that?

Can’t Have Your Cake was the title i suggested to Michael, he did’nt use it. I wrote all the music which i produced in my manhattan apartment and never gave permission to be released commercially i might add….Michael did’nt think it was worthy of the Jerusalem Slim record so i presented the music to Vince who wrote the lyrics. Absolutely none of Michaels contributions to that song were used on the Vince Neil album.

12. Why don’t you call interviewers when you have scheduled interviews for major publications? Is it because you’re too cheap to make the long-distance calls, as your publicist says?

I make my call’s when doing interviews….i try to avoid giving out my number. One thing i am not, is cheap….much to my accountants dismay.

13. What rock star deserves a smack in the mouth and why?

probably me after you print this stuff.

14. Give us a touring memory about the following cities, and list which band it was with:
Tokyo, Japan = was there for 3 months last year. I love Japan…i’m the average height there ya know, ha ha

London, England = never toured there but have spent time there with Billy. Actually stayed with his folks in Bromley, Great country, gave us all the best rock stars….we stand shoulder to shoulder with em’!

Chicago = like a baby new york. Home of EnufZNuff….great band, great guys.

Atlanta = Produced a band named McQueen Street there. The studio had JohnLennons recording console

Boston = played an all ages show at the Paradise club with Billy Idol in 1981. Mothers were offering their daughters and stuff, very Elvis

Detroit = hell, i dont remember…..that means i must have had fun

Denver = thin air

Los Angeles = home now. You have to hold on to your soul with all your might there, but if you do, it can be a great place to live.

Pittsburgh = played there a bit ago with Billy and Slash joined us for a bad ass version of Shakin’ All Over,

Dallas = big women that say y’all

New York City = (i added this one) the greatest city in the world.

15. What was the most ridiculous amount of money you saw Vince Neil blow at one time?

he did buy a bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothchild at Tavern On The Green in New York City.

16. Who’s more of a pain in the ass to deal with, Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, or Vince Neil?

All 3 guys let me play exactly what i wanted to, so thats cool.

17. What’s up with the hair and how long have you been wearing a wig?
At 42 years of age i’m fucking proud to say it’s all mine.

18. How much blow did you guys go through when you recorded the “Exposed” album?

Oh a fair bit while doing the demos. Not much while making the actual record….it was more of a booze record. I dont really remember Vince being into blow to be honest.

19. What’s up with all the toy gun effects when you play guitar? You don’t think that actually sounds good, do you?

actually…yeah i do…..plus it gives me a free hand to fix my hair.

20. Time for Metal Sludge’s Word Association. We mention a name and you give us your thoughts.

Gene Simmons = mogul

Robbie Crane = had balls…did’nt kiss ass….unlike some others
Bret Michaels = seems like a nice guy with a nice house, but whats up with the southern accent onstage?

Vikki Foxx = stop twirling and groove, good guy, worked hard, he and i are actually the only 2 players on the Vince Exposed record

Michael Monroe = huge talent….total star
Bill Aucoin = owe him a hell of alot. was the best in the day
Vince Neil = strippers and kamikazi’s
Limp Bizkit = innovative and Fred Durst is actually a good video director
Michael Jackson = Huge talent…wore penny loafers in the studio

Billy Idol = the real deal, awesome singer, amazingly intelligent, if i had to go to battle, he’s the guy i would want by my side.

Nikki Sixx = still cool, after working with Vince, i gained a new found respect for him.

Another good interview as far as we’re concerned!
