The 80s Invasion tour opens in Los Angeles, and Metal Sludge has the inside scoop

HOLLYWOOD — The 80s Rock Invasion tour rolled through Los Angeles for opening night on Thursday, Aug. 1, and Enuff Z’Nuff proved spectacular before a near-capacity crowd at the Whisky despite being without founding singer Donnie Vie, who is not doing the tour.
Enuff Z’Nuff still has Chip Z’Nuff, and that’s a lot. The tall bass player with a permanent smile is among the world’s most underrated talents – it’s been that way for decades – and though the Chicago glam band still has never received its due in the form of things like gold records, hit singles and arena tours, Enuff Z’Nuff still packs a punch on stage, and it was great to hear all the great songs again like “New Thing” and “Fly High Michelle.”

Johnny Monaco, a semi-regular replacement for Vie, is back as lead singer and guitar player, and he did a fine job bringing life to the songs.
Z’Nuff took a moment backstage for an exclusive chat with Metal Sludge.
“The band sounds strong, and it’s a nice crowd out there,” Z’Nuff said. “We’re doing 25 cities, and we’re playing in a different city every night instead of just sitting at home and pouting. We’re focusing mainly on the first three or four records, and there are no tapes, no samples, no sequencers, nothing like that. It’s real musicians.”
The 80s Invasion is going in style this summer.
Bang Tango is also on the tour, and the Los Angeles group led by singer Joe Leste did a fine job, too. “Someone Like You” was the highlight.
Ted Poley of Danger Danger is set to join for the rest of the tour beginning on the second night.
“I wasn’t sure how much publicity we would have for this show, but it’s a packed house so I’m excited,” Z’Nuff said. “It’s bittersweet without Donnie Vie. He was a great partner, but he’s doing his own thing with an acoustic tour in Europe, and I wish him the best.”
